Chief Gani Adetola-Kaseem, Principal Partner of Gani Adetola-Kaseem (SAN) Legal Practice graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos with LLB (Hons) and LLM. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1980 after passing the BL examination that year. He won Sir Lionel Brett’s best prize in Criminal Procedure and another prize in commercial law in that examination.
Until his death at the early hours of today, he was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and a Member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (MNIM). He was also a member of the Nigeria Bar Association, Commonwealth Lawyers Association and International Bar Association.
He established the law firm of Gani Adetola-Kaseem & Co in June 1985 after retiring voluntarily from the Nigerian Federal Public Service as Under -Secretary. The firm has now metamorphosed to Gani Adetola-Kaseem (SAN) Legal Practice following a re-branding process.
Chief Adetola-Kaseem was appointed a Notary Public in 1992, and elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2002.
SAN as popularly known among members of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Lagos was a consultant to a number of institutions and conducted important negotiations on their behalf on employment-related matters.
He was legal adviser to several other health institutions. He was invited to be pioneer chairman of the Medical and Health Committee of the Section on Legal Practice of the Nigeria Bar Association between 2011 to 2014.
He was also the Membership Officer of the Healthcare and Life Sciences Committee of the International Bar Association between 2012 and 2015.
Chief Adetola-Kaseem is a pioneer leading practitioner in the area of Medical and Health Law and law relating to the management of health institutions generally. He had for over 25 years been lead counsel to and prosecutor before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and had conducted several appeals from the decision of the Tribunal in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He participated actively in the committees on the repositioning of the National Industrial Court between 2005 and 2011, the result of whose activities culminated in the enactment of the National Industrial Court Act 2006, the National Industrial Court Rules 2007 and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Third Alteration) Act 2010, which made NIC a superior Court of Record and expanded its jurisdiction considerably.
He was largely instrumental to the establishment of the Labour and Employment Committee of the Section on Legal Practice of the Nigerian Bar Association.
GANI ADETOLA-KASEEM (SAN) LP (“GAK LP”) which came into being in June 1985 as Gani Adetola-Kaseem & Co. have a very strong presence in corporate and commercial law practice, especially in the area of Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations where the firm is a leading brand in terms of its spread and depth of practice.
He is survived by Ahmed Adetola-Kazeem, MCIArb (UK), the Founder and Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rights Advocacy Initiative, an NGO advocating for the rights of prisoners and rehabilitating them. Ahmed is a recipient of multiple awards and has spoken in numerous conferences locally and internationally.
He is equally survived among others by Ibrahim Adetola-Kazeem, a Nigerian politician, entrepreneur, activist and Sociologist. Ibrahim is the founder of Nimah Entrepreneurship Advocacy Initiative [N.E.A.I]. He had held many positions in Muslim Students Society of Nigeria and National Youth Council of Nigeria at various times.
