…Ooni Palace may call on the ancestors on the issue, if Akinolu does not receive an apology.
The reason why Oba Of Lagos Snubbed Ooni Of Ife has been revealed. The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi have been trending on social media after a video clip where Oba Akiolu responded to the Ooni with a somewhat dismissive wave of hand after the later approached him to give him a handshake and his refusal to acknowledge the Ooni while addressing the gathering. Many Nigerians have reacted to the ‘unkingly’ action, yet many are still curious of the reason that could warrant such blameworthy display.
This same curiosity has made many to dismiss Chief Lateef Aderibigbe Ajose, the Opeluwa Onido of Lagos, one of the white cap chiefs in Oba Akiolu’s Palace explanation where he claimed that the monarch did not snub the Ooni. According to His claim in a video which was broadcasted on Primetime News of TVC yesterday.
“The sign by Oba Akiolu signifies, ‘inu mi, inu e’, the culture of greeting in Lagos. if Oba Akiolu wanted to ignore, he would have turned his face away from Ooni. There is no misunderstanding between both highly revered Monarchs in Yoruba Land. Oba Akiolu was well represented at the coronation of Ooni of Ife, which attested to the fact that he does not disregard the office of Ooni Adeyeye. There is no sentiment in the culture of Lagos. As we met it that is the way we are doing it. Kabiesi Oba Akiolu is trying to bring back the old pattern, the old culture we have left behind.”
However, the argument which is currently a subject of research is further contested with the second incident at the event.
Though, And as seen in the video that went viral, when the Ooni arrived the event where the Obi of Onitsha (Nnayelugo Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe) and the Oba of Lagos were already seated, he greeted them respectfully but Akiolu snubbed him.
Furthermore, when Ooni mounted the podium to address the Bankers, he acknowledged both the Oba of Lagos and the Obi of Onitsha. But when it got to the turn of the Oba of Lagos to speak, he still refused to acknowledge the Ooni. Observers have questioned the white cap Chief to come up with another story from the culture of Lagos to cover for the Second Snub of Oba of Lagos’, actions that have been widely criticised as arrogant, disrespectful and irresponsible.
Why Oba Of Lagos Snubbed Ooni Of Ife
HRM Rilwan Akiolu’s public snub of the Ooni of Ife, on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, was a fallout of a conversation between them in March, it has emerged. According to insiders who are in the know, trouble began when the Ooni placed a call to Oba Akiolu, informing him about his invitation to the Commonwealth.
But the Oba of Lagos got angry that he wasn’t invited for the event, and he requested that the Ooni boycotted the trip, a request that the Ooni did not honour.
BarometerNG recalled that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi was in London with his wife Olori Wuraola to attend the Commonwealth Day Ceremony in London, United Kingdom, alongside Prince Charles of Wales and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall during the month of March 2017.
The monarch also laid a wreath on behalf of Royals from Africa at the memorial.
An authoritative source said, “Ooni accords the older Yoruba monarchs a lot of respect and courtesy. He has even visited a number of them in their palaces since his coronation in December 2015. He wants to build bridges of understanding.
“Ooni usually informs the Alake of Egbaland, Awujale of Ijebuland and Oba of Lagos, among others, of his plans. Even when he’s travelling abroad, he tells them.”
“When he was going to London to honour the invitation of the Commonwealth, he told them. But when he informed Oba of Lagos about the March trip, he was upset.
“Oba of Lagos flared up during the phone call, and mentioned why he was not invited. Ooni offered to help to see if Oba of Lagos could be shortlisted for the trip, but he declined.
“The discussion was heated, and Oba Akiolu insisted that the Ooni should boycott the London event slated for March 13 and 14. The phone did not end on a happy note,” another insider told Encomium.
The Ooni duly attended the Commonwealth Day celebrations in London, presented a speech, laid a wreath and graced many other events during the trip. Since the Ooni returned from London, the Bankers’ event of Tuesday, April 25 was the first time both were meeting.
Though, the Director of Media and Public Affairs in the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare had earlier said that the monarch is not ready to release any official statement on the issue, adding that he still accords his Lagos counterpart the respect he deserves.
However, the Head of Palace Directorate of Tourism, Awoyemi Tunde, speaking to Premium Times, said that the Palace “will call on the ancestors on the issue,” if it does not receive an apology.
“It is not a slap on the Ooni of Ife but rather a slap on the Oba of Lagos. The stool of Oba of Lagos was founded by Olofin Ogunfunminire and the Ooni of Ife is the Oba of Yoruba land. The Oba of Lagos has to come to terms with the fact that Ooni is the royal father of Yorubaland, it is necessary that all persons come together to unite Yoruba land but really the issue at the event is very condemnable,” Tunde said.
“God gave Ooni of Ife Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the mandate to unite the Yoruba land and nothing will stop him from doing that,” he added.
Tunde was quoted as saying: “If we don’t receive an apology especially with the image of Ile-Ife, we will call on the ancestors on the issue.”
